What is Plaque and Tartar? While plaque and tartar are different, tartar and calculus are one in the same. Calculus or tartar can have a significant impact on your oral health, any remaining natural teeth and denture function. Plaque is that sticky yellowy film that’s left on your teeth every day after eating. Plaque is a Biofilm made up of bacteria and if left can develop into a thriving microcolony attached to your natural teeth and dentures. If not regularly removed plaque will mix with minerals in your saliva and harden into Tartar/Calculus over time, causing a build-up of hard ugly, rough deposits on your denture surfaces. These deposits are difficult to get rid of, can cause irritation, look unsightly and cause 'denture bad breath' and will ultimately shorten the life of both natural teeth and your dentures. To maintain denture health, performance and longevity, make sure you brush your dentures twice each day and use a good denture cleansing solution at least once a day to get rid of the build-up and prevent calculus from forming in the first place, and help preserve your oral health, any remaining natural teeth and denture function.
